Before reviewing our selections of unique cuisines, here is a brief history of Columbia.
In 1786, the General Assembly of South Carolina approved Columbia as the state capital. By 1816, the town had grown to 250 homes and a population exceeding 1,000. The first paved streets were surfaced in 1908.
The federal courthouse, transformed into Columbia City Hall in 1937, proudly stands on the National Register of Historic Places. Alfred Bult Mullett, President Ulysses S Grant’s federal architect, designed this beautiful granite building.
As the state capital, Columbia is also the home to the main campus of the University of South Carolina.
Our focus is on the unique cuisines, and we regularly update our preferred eateries in each town as we explore them, so check back often.
The Mediterranean Tea Room pleasantly surprised us during our quest for healthy eateries. Its unassuming exterior is a disguise for its internal personality and excellent offerings.
Our lovely waitress, full of energy, guided us through the menu helping us resolve our indecisiveness.
The restaurant specializes in Middle Eastern and Greek cuisine, including gyros, hummus, falafel, Greek salads, and kebabs. The food is fresh and mouthwateringly delicious, making it one of the top-rated restaurants for Greek food in Columbia, yet its ample servings are affordably priced.

My daughter enjoyed the Falaheen salad with a side of gyro meat.
I couldn’t decide which pita pocket to try, so following the waitress’s suggestion, I opted for half Baba Feta and half Tabbouleh and Hummus.
No matter how full you are, don’t leave without savouring the Baklava!
