Columbia – Your Guide to Unique Cuisines for 2024
Before reviewing our selections of unique cuisines, here is a brief history of Columbia.
In 1786, the General Assembly of South Carolina approved Columbia as the state capital. By 1816, the town had grown to 250 homes and a population exceeding 1,000. The first paved streets were surfaced in 1908.
The federal courthouse, transformed into Columbia City Hall in 1937, proudly stands on the National Register of Historic Places. Alfred Bult Mullett, President Ulysses S Grant’s federal architect, designed this beautiful granite building.
As the state capital, Columbia is also the home to the main campus of the University of South Carolina.
Our focus is on the unique cuisines, and we regularly update our preferred eateries in each town as we explore them, so check back often.
Mediterranean Tea Room
The Mediterranean Tea Room pleasantly surprised us during our quest for healthy eateries. Its unassuming exterior is a disguise for its internal personality and excellent offerings.
Our lovely waitress, full of energy, guided us through the menu helping us resolve our indecisiveness.
The restaurant specializes in Middle Eastern and Greek cuisine, including gyros, hummus, falafel, Greek salads, and kebabs. The food is fresh and mouthwateringly delicious, making it one of the top-rated restaurants for Greek food in Columbia, yet its ample servings are affordably priced.
Prices and selections as of my visit on 16th August 2024.
My daughter enjoyed the Falaheen salad with a side of gyro meat.
I couldn’t decide which pita pocket to try, so following the waitress’s suggestion, I opted for half Baba Feta and half Tabbouleh and Hummus.
No matter how full you are, don’t leave without savouring the Baklava!
Whether you’re road-tripping through South Carolina or flying into Columbia, this cozy delight is not to be missed!
Menkoi Ramen House
You won’t find Menkoi Ramen House in Fodor’s Travel Guide for the Carolinas. My grandson’s friend recommended it to us, and so glad he did.
This Japanese restaurant boasts authentic unique cuisine. It can be found in the Village at Sandhill shopping center area. This is a maze of strip malls including over 50 different businesses. Menkoi’s address is – 493 suite 1 Town Center Pl.
Ingredients are fresh and painstakingly prepared. This is quick, affordable, quality food. My daughter had Vegetable Ramen and my grandson and I had Tonkotsu Ramen (pork base with pork, nori, egg, and fishcake). Everything was deliciously filling.
If you like Japanese food, be sure to include Menkoi Ramen House on your list of Columbia experiences!
